Crowdsourcing 2.0: The Facebook Focus Group

Adam Mansbach’s Go the F— to Sleep wasn’t a serious book proposal. It was a just a funny status update.

A tired dad of a two-year-old, he posted, “Look out for my forthcoming children’s book, Go The F–k to Sleep.”

It wasn’t until he read all the comments that he realized he actually had something. Now, even though the book won’t be out till October, it’s already No. 2 on Amazon’s best-seller list. Not bad for a jokey Facebook post, right?

Some of the best ideas come that way – when you’re not trying too hard to have a great idea, but just relaxed and riffing on life.

And the thing that people complain about social networks for – that they’re an echo chamber – might be one of their hidden talents. They can let you see right away when you say something that really resonates.

So the next time you have a little thought that generates a lot of conversation, stop and give it a minute. Maybe you’ve got more than a great comment on your hands after all.
