Habit Forming

This morning I read that 45 percent of what we do every day isn’t a conscious decision, but simply habit.

That’s kind of scary, isn’t it? We spend almost half of our days on autopilot. Where you go. What you say. How you act. All done just because it’s what you normally do.

If you have habits you don’t like – and who doesn’t? – check out that link above. It’s fascinating, all about how to change your habits. The original author, though, kindly boils it down even better in this infographic:

You can’t be deliberate every moment of the day. Our willpower doesn’t work like that. Our attention doesn’t work like that. So you have to concede a bit of your control to your autopilot. But the thing is, it won’t do what you SAY you want,  it’ll do what you actually want, so you’ve got to make sure you know what that really is.

Your beliefs become your thoughts,
Your thoughts become your words,
Your words become your actions,
Your actions become your habits,
Your habits become your values,
Your values become your destiny.
– Mahatma Gandhi
