Imagine a map.

That image? In the next few years, it’s going to become quaint. Delightfully retro. Pleasantly antique.

Maps have always been drawings. A map has always been “a diagrammatic representation of an area of land or sea showing physical features, cities, roads, etc.” *

But the entire definition of a map is changing. Check out this video, demonstrating what’s touted as Apple’s forthcoming map service.

There are no diagrams, no drawings. You’re flying around the world as it really looks. What do you need a representation for when you have the real thing?

As entertainment changed when television was introduced, this will change how we figure out how to move around. Our devices, our routines, all of it.

What will those changes look like? Who knows. There’s no road map.
