Questionnaire from 12 Questions.
1. What is your hometown?
Roxbury is where I lived from when I was 8 until 21. Before that, and after that, were a lot more fragmented. So, close enough.
2. With what fictional character do you most identify?
Elizabeth Bennett, Jo March, and Hermione Granger. Because I speak my mind often enough to keep myself in trouble, because I am flamboyantly nerdy and emotionally driven, because people identify me by my mess of hair, because I need to be writing, and because I’m incapable of being elegant.
3. In the movie of your life, cast an actor to play you.
People – who I loved very very much for this – used to say I looked like Nicole Kidman, but that was many years ago and also it was when she had mimetic muscle control. In any case, I can pick anyone, so I choose Amy Adams, because she’s absolutely luminescent.
4. What work of art speaks to your soul?
When I walked into the Basilica of St. Peter I must have looked like such a stereotype: my jaw dropped and I kept just gazing up, turning in circles. It’s so big and beautiful that I had a hard time doubting the existence of a divinity capable of inspiring faith that powerful.
Also, Van Gogh’s Waterloo Bridge paintings, partly for their skill but partly for what the bridge means to me.
(I realize I’ve only thought of visual art. Interesting.)
5. What books are you currently reading or recommending?
For someone historically so anti-e-reader, my phone is winning me over… it makes books just so RIGHT THERE. Last month I read the 50 Shades trilogy and the Hunger Games trilogy on it, because 1. I am a joiner, 2. everybody needs a little smut now and then, 3. I love YA books, 4. they were RIGHT THERE. I recommend both.
Now I’m reading (e-reading?) “Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes”, and my friend lent me a paperback of “Protecting the Gift,” which I was assigned, so I’ll probably pick that up soon too.
6. What song or album is currently in heavy rotation on your iPod?
David Guetta’s “Nothing But the Beats” album. There is bouncing around. Oh yes.
7. What’s the last movie that made you cry?
The beginning montage of “Up” made me cry – again – last week. Those handprints on the mailbox. Sniffle. And I fully expect to cry in “The Hunger Games” this week.
8. Cat person or dog person?
Both. My cat is pretty excellent, but I get revoltingly gooey over dogs.
9. What is more important, truth or kindness?
It feels like “truth” should be the right answer but “kindness” is my real one. I don’t see them as opposites, though. Telling the truth is normally the kind thing to do.
10. How do you define sin?
Sin is moving away from God? Is that the Catholic school version? I forget. Sin is doing wrong, despite knowing that you’re hurting someone or your relationship with God.
11. How do you define virtue?
Virtue is taking an action for the sake of the its innate goodness, not because you’re going to get something out of it (results, praise, pride, tail, whatever).
12. Design your headstone: What does it say? What does it look like?
Nothing fancy, just name and dates. If I do this right, my epitaph will be how the people I love remember me.
Your turn….
