In which I face up to the terrifying iSight camera – and open iMovie for the first time – in an attempt to prove that New Jersey accents on TV are a farce, but in so doing, give you the opportunity to mock me for the way I say “crayon”. Amy (and many others …) have already way represented the South, so here goes my effort for the Northeast.
The way the meme goes is that you first say these words:
aunt, route, wash, oil, theater, iron, salmon, caramel, fire, water, sure, data, ruin, crayon, toilet, New Orleans, pecan, both, again, probably, spitting image, Alabama, lawyer, coupon, mayonnaise, syrup, pajamas, caught
…and then answer these questions:
What is it called when you throw toilet paper on a house?
What is the bug that when you touch it, it curls into a ball?
What is the bubbly carbonated drink called?
What do you call gym shoes?
What do you say to address a group of people?
What do you call the kind of spider that has an oval-shaped body and extremely long legs?
What do you call your grandparents?
What do you call the wheeled contraption in which you carry groceries at the supermarket?
What do you call it when rain falls while the sun is shining?
What is the thing you use to change the TV channel?
So here goes (yay crayons!)
Oh I love it so much! Surprisingly the wash and water sounded the most different.
I can not believe you haven’t been tp-ing. Even this goody two shoes has. You have to put that on your bucket list!
The “NJ accent” was worth gold! You do it perfectly!
This is genius. I haven’t heard about this Accent Vlog until I saw yours. I really wish I could channel my 18 year old self from Staten Island to do this and compare it with my hybrid PA/SI accent.
BTW, I think it would be complete comedy if you one day just decided to speak like you did at the end of the video with that great NY Jersey Shore stereotype accent!
Amy, I’m so glad you made me do this! Vlogging isn’t quite as scary as I thought it would be. What else might be fun to do it for?
And Tommy, you know darn well that was a Staten Island accent and I was just being non-specific to be polite :) I wonder if I could pull it off for any length of time? I totally want to try that now!
It is pronounced CRAY-ON. Two syllables. What you said is a kind of berry :)
Nice vlog lady! You should do more of them! Especially since you have that neato library as your backdrop.
Cray-ohhhn just sounds funny. I don’t know why I say cra’n. Does anyone else in the world? No matter.
P.S. I just started to Google what kind of fancy only-chefs-know-about-it berry you were talking about until I said it in my head.
Oh. Yes. That.
Hee. FWIW, I asked around at work and a lot of people there said “cra’n” so I guess it IS a regional thing and I’m the weirdo.
Oh good, is it a NJ thing? Maybe I’m not crazy after all!
(…who am I kidding…)
