“tackling the list” – by Maya Stein

Four days in, and I’m on a rampage,
itching to cross off the thick stack of to-do’s
drummed up for the occasion of the new year. A stage
has been set, the theatre filled with the apocalyptic chorus
of my own taunting to not let up until the list is inked black,
as if some timekeeper up above is eyeing each delay
and chalking it up to willful sloth. Sometimes, though, it’s the crack
in the pile that’s good enough. Two loads of laundry, say,
or the bureau drawer fixed at last. As long as you’re still in it,
forget the largeness of the hour. Aim your target on the minute.
