Did you think falling in love was about luck, or fate, or destiny? Or maybe shared values or dreams?
Yeah, no. Apparently not.
Apparently, all you have to do is take a 36-question quiz, then lock eyes for precisely four minutes.
According to the New York Times.
Do you have any idea how many people must have done this since the article was posted four days ago? It’s going to top their charts for a while. I bet every bartender will see people doing this all spring.
I’m intrigued. I just can’t figure out the feeling behind the intrigue. Is it funny? Sad? Encouraging? Fascinating?
Part of me thinks it’d be awesome if it were that simple. How many people could be so much happier?
But part of me think it’d be kind of terrible if it were. Love isn’t tricking your brain chemistry into manufacturing closeness, trust, warmth… is it?
Well, if it is, it shouldn’t be.
Love is sharing adventures and arguments. It’s knowing someone so well that you recognize the endearing habits they don’t even realize they have. It’s the exhale you can do when you realize someone has your back as hard as you have theirs. It’s trading your worsts and sharing your bests. It’s when the sight of one person acts like blinders for the whole rest of the world. It’s knowing exactly how you fit. It is, in the words of another NYT article I tore out a long time ago, “the cushioned softness of an ordinary life.”
Love is a whole lot of stuff. And maybe a quiz can tell you if you already have it – or if you could. But I don’t think it can conjure it.
I think I’m glad.
