The key to success on the social web is to eliminate self interest.

And this, friends, is what gets me so redonkulously charged up about social media.

Because all you have to do is be nice. Interested.

All you have to do is talk to people. Not talk AT them. Not interested in what they can do for you. Not nice for as long as the cocktail party lasts.

Just plain nice. Just plain interested. Just plain talking.

To someone who loathes the old-fashioned way of doing business, which was still common when I started out – wearing power suits and whipping out business cards, Working The Room, having a Work Personality different from who you really were at home – this is fabulous.

If you’re really smart, and you really care, it shows. If you aren’t and you don’t, go do something else. It’s as simple as that.
